Freyssinet was appointed to carry out repair and protection works at the South Hook LNG Receiving Terminal in Milford Haven, South Wales. The project formed part of a wider development to support LNG operations and involved extending the service life of an existing jetty facility.
The jetty, over 30 years old, extends for approximately 1km and comprises 125 individual support structures. At the jetty head, a further 1km‑long section contained five existing berths, which were being converted into two LNG super‑tanker berths.

Scope of works
Freyssinet delivered concrete repairs and cathodic protection (CP) to reinforced concrete pile caps, prestressed concrete piles, and both existing and new steel piles. Inspections identified chloride contamination throughout the structure, leading to reinforcement corrosion and concrete damage that would have continued without long‑term protection measures.
Repair and protection solution
The team undertook a detailed condition survey to identify areas of deterioration. They removed damaged and contaminated concrete using hydrodemolition, which minimised impact on the sound substrate. They then completed repairs using dry‑mix sprayed concrete.
The works provided cathodic protection to the concrete using a titanium mesh anode embedded within a sprayed‑concrete overlay. In addition, the team installed impressed current cathodic protection systems to protect the submerged sections of both concrete and steel piles, ensuring long‑term durability in the aggressive marine environment.
Integrated delivery
The project was delivered through close collaboration across the Freyssinet Group. Specialist sprayed concrete expertise was provided by Freyssinet France, cathodic protection design and technical support by CCSL, and overall project management and site installation by Freyssinet UK.
This integrated approach allowed Freyssinet to deliver critical elements of the work in‑house, giving the client confidence in the quality, coordination and durability of the solution.
Outcome
The works successfully repaired existing deterioration, halted ongoing corrosion and provided long‑term protection to the jetty structure, enabling it to safely support LNG operations for decades to come.
